Uhhh, this was functionality in the first iPhone, I believe. I'm pretty sure Steve Jobs showed it off at the keynote when the Jesus-phone was announced.

Nope, just tried it with my 1.1.4 phone and I just get .com.

Holding down the period button also gets the same choices in the compose mail screen. I consider this to be yet another elegant feature of Apple design. Very space-sensitive and very easy.
Michael said 6:50PM on 7-15-2008
I don't remember the feature being demonstrated by Steve Jobs on stage last year, but a pop-up option with .com and .co.uk has been available on UK iPhones (and iPod touch) since at least November 2007.

Nope, you could hold down the .com button and it would open up a box, but there was only the one domain in it. I submitted a request for this feature as well, glad to see it's here. Now the ability to add whatever domains you wanted (top level or not) would be cool....

Oh, and if you are using a non US keyboard (UK in my case), your country's own domain will appear, such as .co.uk

I came in here to moan about .org .net and .edu being the fixed options instead of .co.uk, but then I read your post and all is well in the world again! Thanks for that info, it saved me a minor rant :) .
Jamma said 6:56PM on 7-15-2008
Yeah i was going to rant too, but i thought i'd try it first. i'm happy now, it's saving me loads of time typing in web addresses :)
Well spotted guys

Ty-typical TUAW always forgets non-Americans :D
Mine official shows: .dk, .com, .org, .nu

what is annoying (strange) .. is that it allows:
*.edu / *.org / *.co.uk & .com ... what about .net for the UK? shame there isn't an option to change it to what you would like. I can't remember the last time I went to a *.edu site, or even a .org site if I am honest. .net / .com & .co.uk are the main ones. (for me that is)
2.1 software anyone?

No .ca for Canadians.
Is it because mine is an iPod Touch, or is it because it's Canada?
Either way, I'd love to find a hack to add it in.
Jason said 6:24PM on 7-15-2008
also, if it's just a period without the com, but it's for an email address field, you can hold down the period and get this same thing.

Great tip. Now can someone tell me how I can keep iPhoto from trying to import my photos from my iPhone every time I plug it into my computer?

The best you can do is tell iPhone not to open when a camera is attached. You can set this from the General Preferences screen of iPhoto.

I've heard people complain about this, but I've never had it happen to me (8 GB 2G since Dec 07). Weird.
ERock said 11:46PM on 7-15-2008
I have an AppleScript application that runs whenever a camera is connected. It tells iPhoto to ignore the iPhone. Unfortunately, I can't recall where I found the tip, but I'm happy to share the app.

Sorry for a little bit of irrelevancy here, but i've just noticed on 2.0 that contacts now has a search, the iTunes remote app has a search,
yet music doesn't... even on the iPod Touch
i know it's not hard to find music, but i have a damn sight more songs than i do contacts, and a quick search would make finding a single song/artist/etc much easier
p.s maybe an e-mail inbox search would be handy too
