Unhappy My huskies attacked and hurt a cat!

This is so sad
When my mum went to call the dogs inside, none came except Flea, so she went down to the back garden to see what the two husky pups were doing. She found them attacking a pile of grey fur which was churned up in mud and feces. She picked the poor cat up and took it inside. It's so lucky she found it before they did any more damage! I wasn't there when it happened, but apparently he can't walk and we're scared there may be broken bones. He was also defacating on himself.
When I came home and went in to see the kittie, there was a pile of vomit next to him. There were definate traces of kibble, so he's obviously a pet. He is smokey grey and long haired with amber eyes. He is very beautiful. He let me scritch him on the forehead and I dropped some water onto his mouth from my finger, and he licked a bit. I didn't dare to pick him up and examine him incase there are any broken bones or internal injuries. He looks fine to me, curled up contently in the box, watching me with mild interest. But I know from birds how easily sick animals can feign health. We're taking him to the vets in the morning but for now he's lying in a sideways cardboard box on a towel with a bowl of water, shut up safely (away from the dogs as well as the birds) in the study.
I am so disgusted at the puppies. I've never had aggressive dogs before... and they've killed four of my chickens and now attacked a pet cat. If anyone remembers my worries about ever getting a kitten, I guess they were valid It's midnight and I'm so scared for this little one. He really is a magnificent looking feline, and so good natured. I really want to hug him and let him know he'll be ok :(

ps. There's no way my puppies could be prosecuted for attacking a cat on their own terrotory, is there?

i think they could...if a person comes over the fence and is attacked by your dogs they could sue you. but then again legally cats aren't supposed to be out of your property so i don't know what the deal is there.

my cat was attacked by a dog and her injuries were so bad she had to be put down :( hopefully this little dude's ok, is he in pain? might have to take him to an emergancy vet sooner than that!

Oh goodness, poor kitty. I hope he will be ok. please let us know what the vet says.
As for the cat's owner being able to do anything legally, I seriously doubt it. A lot of places are getting leash laws where cats are concerned now too, but if someone willingly lets their cats run around outside they are taking huge risks as to attacks, cars, poisoning etc and it is their own responsibility in my opinion. Most cats are not going to just sit in their own yard the entire time they are outside, so things are expected to happen.
I dont think this person would have a legitimate leg to stand on legally where this is concerned. The fact that you are willing to take it to the vet and get it cared for says a lot and if they are a decent animal owner, they will go with that.

I meant to write *territory* Ahh I was writing so fast lol.
Yeah Kali, the laws don't allow cats to be out at night, so I guess they were in the wrong. Poor kitty. He has dags in his fur too. I'd love to give him a good brushing.
vle1170, there is no way my mum, or I, would leave a cat outside when it needs help- or not take it from the vets when it may be hurt, hopefully the owners do see that as a decent thing :/ Oh did I mention he has no collar?
I shall see what the vet says and give updates tomorrow.

That's awful - but unfortunately some dogs have more aggression toward 'trespassers' than others - your huskies are probably more aggressive because they see themselves as a pack. Gladly taking the opportunity to hunt a cat when it comes along, especially in their own territory.
Hope the little kitty will be ok - cats are fairly tough animals. Just keep him warm, comfortable and hydrated, just as you have with small amounts of water, if you think he looks 'dry' and hopefully you can get her to the vet in the morning.

I doubt whether any action could be taken - the cat was in your yard, so don't worry about that.

Give him a pat and blow him a kiss - speak some soft, kind words to him and that'll give him some encouragement to get better! Then both have a sleep.

Im just like you Ashling, I cant leave anything outside that i find hurt, we even brought a rainbow snake in that had been injured when I was a kid. I blame my parents for my love of animals.
I hope the little guy is ok, and he knows you care and are worried about him without giving him huge hugs, petting him on the head and talking softly to him is just as good.

Thanks cashmerekiddy, yeah my 'wolfpups' will be 'wolfpups' I guess. Their instincts are so strong. Doesn't stop me being disappointed in them though. Flea didn't do anything, I don't know what it is with the huskies? Flea never killed chickens either. I guess it's the breed.
A rainbow snake eh? *googles* Most people kill snakes here. I found a decapitated diamond python and wondered how someone could do that? Yeah I jump at the chance to look after any animal. I guess it's my mum who got me into it. I have a memmories of her dodging traffic to rescue a possum once or twice! Oh and dragging dead ones from the middle of the road to check their pouch for babies!

The kitty's looking ok. He doesn't seem in any pain, but I'm sure he must be shocked and in a little pain at least. Those huskies aren't gentle! He sits quietly and just watches when I go in. He sniffed my hand and let me pat him, so I guess he knows it'll be fine.

The only thing I kill are fleas, ticks, flies, ants...nasty things like that. i dont even kill spiders. they found a brown widow here in the US, its just like a black widow but its brownish in color and not as shiny but still has the red hour glass, and they are more poisonous than a black widow, I had one living on my front porch, it didnt bother me so I didnt bother it, then a brown recluse came along and killed it.
I know im probably a glutton for punishment not killing them but for some reason i cant.
My parents got me a puppy and kitten before I was even born, and I not only swerve for possums and squirrels and such, but I pull over for turtles and get them out of the road and if there is a dead deer i look very closely to make sure there is no fawn nearby or still inside her. I will rescue just about anything if given the chance.

The cat is fine! He was microchipped, and was actually a patient at the vet he was taken to! He had no broken bones or anything so it was a happy ending.

I agree he should have been taken right away, but Luisa, it wasn't exactly up to me... I had no means of taking a cat to the emergency vet which is a 20 minute drive away (I don't have a full license yet) and wasn't going to wake my parents up at midnight (when I got home) to take a kitty to the vet, when they'd already made the decision not to :(

vle1170- That's so great of you. I think everyone should be like that. hehe I can't kill spiders either- unless they are venemous and INSIDE my house- wolfspiders, redbacks, whitetails etc. Huntsmans (which grow to tarantula sizes) I take outside on my hand or in a jar, and daddy long legs are left to keep pests at bay. Yeah I move dead animals off the road so that the wedge-tailed eagles, Ravens, goanas and other creatures don't get run over too while scavenging! Then a check of the pouch etc. Never found a baby, thank heavens. I slowed down from a fast speed to avoid hitting a wombat just recently. Silly thing stood there in the middle of the road staring at me for ages. They're so dopy.
I'm going up to the high country tomorrow (I'm driving!) and I'll hopefully see some wildlife... being the driver, I get to choose whether to stop or not, so I'll get to keep an eye out for needy creatures. I'll also get any pictures I can! Ashling is coming up too... and the dogs... there are koalas, lyrebirds, king parrots, rosellas, Ravens, kangaroos, wallabies and wombats in the area. There are also tales of pet/ circus cougars and panthers that escaped 100 years ago and are now roaming the area, so it can be quite scary at night!
