Diamond in the Rough: Polishing Your Ski Technique

Diamond in the Rough: Polishing Your Ski Technique

Oct 24, 2014

Want to be a better skier? You need to practice. Of course, hitting the slopes isn’t the only thing that will turn you into the next Lindsey Vonn or Alberto Tomba. You need good instruction, and following these tips wouldn’t hurt either. Take Up Strength Training Before you head off to book Park City long term rentals for the ski season, step into a gym with free weights. Why free weights? It takes an impressive amount of strength to shift and pivot out there on the slopes. While not every skier trains with weights, some do, and they benefit from the added strength.   Strong people are generally more capable at everything they do, so this is a general recommendation for just about any activity you plan on engaging in. But, it’s especially useful for demanding sports and hobbies, like skiing. The program of choice? Keep it simple. Start with Starting Strength. Take On An Athletic Stance When you ski, you have to maintain a “hunkered down” stance to stay stable. Good skiers retract their legs under them. This keeps the body and skis connected. If you extend your legs too early as the ground gives way, you may lose your balance and fall. Keeping your knees partially bent, and your quads tight, will help with balance. Keeping your glutes tight will also help give you power through the hips – useful for turning, stopping, and all that good stuff. Be Forward Looking You have to be willing, and able, to look down the hill at what’s coming. A second is a long time in downhill skiing. You must gather information about snow texture, depth, route options, exposure, and obstacles at lightning speed. This is where experience helps the most, and getting out on the slopes is invaluable. But, it’s also where good instruction makes a difference. Partner with an experienced skier who knows how to develop this heightened sense. It’s a skill, but it’s something you have to learn conceptually as well as existentially. Live In The Moment Always focus your attention on what’s happening. You should always be looking downhill, but you have to be able to balance forward vision with living...

Mountain Skiing: There’s an App for That

Mountain Skiing: There’s an App for That

Oct 18, 2014

When you head out to the slopes this year, bring your skis and your tablet (or at least your smartphone). When you’re not racing down the hills, you can use the free apps many resorts are now offering as a way to help you make the most of your stay. You can also pick some “off-label” apps that can help you get more out of any vacation. OffGrid   Offgrid disconnects you from the world. Many people these days are looking for more interaction, more connection. Offgrid offers you less. But, when you’re on vacation, less is more. By pressing a single button, you can block all incoming messages to your smartphone and get back to nature. You get a detailed report of what you missed while you were away, and an automatic message is sent to would-be time thieves. When you’re ready to enter civilization again, you just shut the app off. Ski Tracks Ski tracks is a mobile app that uses GPS to track your routes, hiking, runs, and elevation. You can fill the app with 14 hours of activity and, when you get home, load up your day and see it displayed in portrait format. ( Image by Helena Normark ) Liftopia Liftopia’s strength is in its lift ticket discount finder. Browse all of the deals from local or national resorts. You can also get updates about local weather conditions to see if your favorite ski resort is primed for a run. ( Image by reeceevan ) Whistler Blackcomb Mobile App The Whistler Blackcomb mobile application is offered by Whistler Blackcomb. It features information about hiking trails, summer lift status, bike park trails, and even Whistler Blackcomb lodging – just in case you want to plan a weekend getaway. The app is free, and focuses primarily on the Alpine and valley, but also gives you insights as to what’s happening there, as there’s access to the webcams right in the app. Ski and Snow Report Ski and Snow Report is for powder lovers. This app analyzes the snowfall data of major resorts, not by computer or by aggregating data from resorts, but by hand-fed analytics. That’s right, app staffers post information about snow and weather...

Falling in-love with a Place Down South: Columbia

Falling in-love with a Place Down South: Columbia

Oct 12, 2014

Every adventure is different, not one experience is the same, but then again; there are those countries or cities that I’d easily fall in-love with, and the dreadful day of packing my things and saying good bye would eventually take its toll. I went down south once, and there I fell in-love with a city, the City of Columbia, where the food is remarkably tasty and cheap, and not to mention the adventures I’d randomly come across each and every day. Listed below is a list of things that made me want to stay–a little longer than I originally planned. You can easily go from one location to another It’s easy to transfer from one location to another since Columbia has 2-3 major bus stops that does trips almost 24 /7 not only that everything is accessible, from coffee shops, pharmacies and ATM’s everything is just around the corner and most of them are on 24hour operations too, which makes it comforting to know that you can always run to the nearest shops and get what you need anytime of the day. Food One of the activities I’d enjoy most when traveling is EATING! I love how different flavors would make me smile and satisfied and yes, Columbia has got one of the best street foods. While strolling around the area during sunset, I would usually sit around one of the food stalls and enjoy my meal. Columbia’s Empanada is simply delicious, it’s a mixture of cornmeal stuffed with beans, potato, carrots and other spices then deep fried or baked into perfection.  It’s been my comfort food since day 1. Aside from Empanada, what really amazed me is their selection of fresh fruits that can be found EVERYWHERE, yes you can get the freshest, ripest tropical fruit all over the place, not to mention they’re really cheap too. (image by : Heidi G ) Cheap Accommodations Now who would have thought that you can actually spend a night in Columbia for only $4 – $15? Yes, they’re that cheap, not to mentions their rooms are really clean too which amazed me, who would have thought that you could get both comfort and relaxation at...

Benefits of Travelling as a Couple

Oct 9, 2014

Often times we would feel disconnected or even distanced with our loved ones. Somehow we might feel detached even if we stay on the same house or even on the same room. Though we may not notice it, lack of intimacy and communication can sometimes leave our relationship to crumble and this is where traveling as a couple would come in. Listed below are the benefits of traveling as a couple and how traveling can mend and enhance relationships. It will give you time to talk things out We would sometimes get too pre-occupies that we would tend to disregard whatever ever misunderstandings we’ve had with our significant other, we may no longer  have time to talk things out and really understand what the issue was, but traveling as a couple can work wonders in terms of intimacy and communication. Take the time to talk thing out while you’re out of your busy schedule. Take time to listen to each other while you enjoy the scenery, go to the beach or take a trek on the mountains. By then you’ll be able to have quality time with each other.
